Sittingbourne is an industrial town about eight miles east of Gillingham, off a creek in the Swale, a channel separating the Isle of Sheppey from mainland Kent. Sittingbourne has significant links with the history of the river barge. At the centre of the town's paved high street is the sculpture of a bronze bargeman. The Dolphin Yard Sailing Barge Museum is located on Milton Creek. Awaiting relocation, it is a museum about all aspects of sailing barges. To the west of the Dolphin Yard is the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway, a heritage railway that operates from Sittingbourne to the banks of The Swale.
