The pleasant West Yorkshire town of Shipley to the north of Bradford has far more to offer the visitor than its population of less than 29,000 might suggest. Shipley runs into Bradford these days, but it retains its own identity, and has some special attractions that help create that identity. Not least among those attractions is the Victorian model village of Saltaire, built by Sir Titus Salt to house the workers in his alpaca and wool businesses away from the slums of Bradford. Whether this was a philanthropic gesture or a sound business move is much debated.
