Selly Oak can trace its history back as far as Roman Times and there are a few theories as to how it gained its name, the most gruesome being that it is a corruption of Sarah’s Oak, then Sally’s Oak, the Sarah (Sally) being a local witch who was either hanged from it or buried nearby with an oak stake through her heart that later grew into an oak tree. The tree from which the area gained its name remained in place until the early 20th century when the stump was removed and relocated to Selly Oak park where it remains today with a plaque stating “Butt of Old Oak Tree from which the name of Selly Oak was derivedâ€.
