A small, semi-rural town in the metropolitan borough of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear in north east England, Ryton was, until the 1970’s, an independent town in County Durham. The economy was built on coal mining and agriculture, the former dating back to Roman times but became extensive after king Edward II granted mining outside of the walls. Agriculture is a mix of pastoral and arable farming. In addition to coal mining, Ryton was also home to the lead-smelting, reverberatory furnaces of the Ryton Company whose mines were on Alston Moor.
