With a history of industrial toil, and a punishing work ethic, Rutherglen is quintessentially Glaswegian. A south-eastern suburb, bordering Cambuslang and Toryglen, Rutherglen is the oldest Royal burgh in Scotland. Nowadays, most of its residents make the short daily commute to work in Glasgow’s city centre – 60 years ago, it was Rutherglen at the centre of economic activity, as coal mining and White’s Chemical works kept men in a job. Coal mining – one of the hardest ways to make a living – all but died out in the aftermath of the Second World War, and the naivety of the Swinging 60s saw Rutherglen’s chemical works pollute a great deal of the surrounding area with heavy metals.
