Rugeley in South Staffordshire is possibly famous for its power station – at one time there were two but nowadays there is just the Rugeley B power station supplying electricity for around 1 million people. In the19th century Rugeley was deemed to be one of the largest and striking market towns in the area. Lying just to the northern edge of Cannock Chase it has nearly always enjoyed its industrial heritage, there is evidence that in medieval times that iron workings and glass manufacture took place here whilst in the 19th and 20th centuries Rugeley was a centre for coal mining and this was one of the main reasons that the original Rugeley A power station was located here.
