Some fourteen miles North of Manchester lies the town of Rochdale, former home to Gracie Fields and the former larger than life MP now known as Sir Cyril Smith. Rochdale can trace its historic roots back to the Domesday Book and since medieval times has been an important market town that were held as far back as the 13th Century. By Tudor times the area had a growing reputation for the production of woollen cloth but it was the Industrial Revolution that was to dramatically change the landscape of Rochdale as it embraced the new technology and textile mills were erected.
