The name ‘Prudhoe’ is thought to by many to be derived from the Saxon “Pruddha’s Hoe, (or Hill)â€. Others believe it to mean Proud Heights.
The town’s official history begins in the Norman Conquest and the building of Prudhoe Castle in the 12th century. This well preserved ancient stronghold is in the care of English Heritage and open to visitors. Associated with the Castle is Prudhoe Grange, a private residence. This was originally a 13th century chapel dedicated to St.
