Portsoy is a small town in Aberdeenshire, 54 miles north-west of Aberdeen, on the north-east coast of Scotland. Portsoy was created a burgh of Barony in 1550. Portsoy is well-known for its ‘Portsoy Marble’ a type of serpentine used for making local jewellery. ‘Portsoy Marble’ was also used for parts of the chimney-pieces in the Palace of Versailles in France, for Louis XIV. The Old harbour originally built c.1550 was re-developed in the 18th century by Partick Ogilvy to export the marble.
