Portpatrick is a fishing and holiday resort in Dumfries and Galloway situated on the south-west coast of Scotland close to the Rhins of Galloway. The village dates back to c1500 with the ruins of Dunskey Castle on the clifftop to the south and the roofless remains of the Old Parish Church with its circular tower. Portpatrick’s first pier was built in 1774 and was the main port for trade with Ireland during the 17th and 18th centuries, however, the harbour became unsuitable for the large steamships and in the 1860’s trade moved to neighbouring Stranraer.
