The village of Piercebridge stands on Dere Street, the original Roman route of the Great North Road, with the remains of the Roman bridge across the Tees still to be seen, though it is some distance from today’s river course. Excavations have revealed a Roman settlement and plenty of evidence of a fort built to protect the crossing point. Piercebridge is a pretty village with many Georgian and Victorian cottages, some white- or cream-washed. Some of these cottages have just the one storey and are perhaps more reminiscent of Scottish villages than English.
