In the Piddle Valley, on the dip slope of the Dorset Downs, lies the ancient village of Piddletrenthide. The village lies on the B3143 road, with Piddlehinton and Puddletown to the south and Alton Pancras and Buckland Newton to the north. Piddletrenthide gets its name from the fact that it is situated on the River Piddle and was assessed for thirty hides in the Doomsday book of 1086. The church at Piddletrenthide has a Latin inscription dated 1487 using Hindu-Arabic numerals. This is an unusually early use, with most of England still using Roman numerals for another century.
