Situated on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park, the market town of Pickering is a good base for exploration of the Park, but there is plenty in the ancient market town itself to draw and entertain visitors. Pickering had a population of 6,846 at the last census, and it has the shopping and hospitality facilities expected of a small and very attractive country town. This is said to be a very old settlement, legendarily founded three centuries before the Romans came, but it was in the Norman era that the place became important.
