Paddington is best known for its mainline station. It was here, according to children's author Michael Bond, that his appropriately named character Paddington Bear arrived in London from Peru. To commemorate this fictitious event, a bronze statue of the much-loved bear stands in the station. Another author, station regular Agatha Christie, set one of her mysteries on the "4.50 From Paddington". The station is a Grade I-listed structure designed by Brunel and opened in 1854. Recently, it has survived the threat of redevelopment, and although some modernisation is still intended, Westminster City Council insists that any plans must "preserve and enhance" the protected buildings.
