In the district of Tynedale in Northumberland, thirty-one miles northwest of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, lies the small village of Otterburn on the banks of the river Rede near the confluence of the Otter Burn from which its name is derived. A cousin of William the Conqueror founded Otterburn Tower, a Northumbrian country house, in 1086. Only sixteen miles from the Scottish border, Otterburn played its part in the border raids, the most famous of which was a major battle, in 1388, between the English and Scots armies.
