The substantial village of North Ferriby, with a population of 3,819 as at the 2001 census, sits on the north bank of the Humber about seven miles to the west of Hull. These days it is a pleasant dormitory village for people working in Hull, and because of the excellent links to the M62 and the railway network (with its own station on the lines between Hull and both York and Sheffield) for those employed much further away than that. The name Ferriby is of Danish origin, denoting a settlement with a ferry, in this case linking the village with its partial namesake South Ferriby on the other side of the Humber.
