An archaeological dig has revealed artefacts indicating that Newton le Willows was a settlement as far back as 55 BCThe excavations took place at Castle Hill and suggest that it was constructed by the Celts as a burial mound. At one time known as Newton in Mackerfield and lies approximately midway between Liverpool and Manchester in the North West of England. A major town it enjoyed high levels of employment in its heyday, the Vulcan Works, Parkside Colliery and Sankey Sugar to name a few were all located within easy reach of Newton.
