Newton Abbot, straddling the river Lemon, was once a quiet country market town in rural Devon, that was until the Great Western Railway opened it up to the outside world. Nowadays it is a bustling town with indoor and outdoor markets and many excellent shops. It is often called the “Gateway to moor and sea†Owing to its proximity to the Dartmoor National Park and the popular seaside resorts of Torquay and Teignmouth. Newton Abbot has its own railway museum and of course the Newton Abbot race-course for a day out trying your luck on the horses.
