The old market town of Newent sits in the wide valley that runs from the Forest of Dean to the Malvern Hills in the centre of a rural district 9 miles north west of Gloucester. It`s history can be traced back to at least the Roman period, they are known to have been active in the area and there is some suggestion that Newent may be on the site of a Roman industrial settlement. Newent`s location along one of the old Drove roads from Wales, a twice weekly market and a twice yearly fair (from the 13th century onwards) ensured its prosperity and attracted new industries to the town; a glassworks in 1600 worked by French Huguenot refugees, a Cloth Mill in 1608 followed by an Iron Works in 1639.
