On the northern bank of the river Tyne, opposite the Gateshead are of Blaydon in north east England, lies Newburn, a semi rural village dating from which Roman remains have been discovered close to Hardrians Wall. The site of a dispute between two claimants to the Earl of Northumberland in 1072, the local parish church was destroyed in a fire. In 1640 the Battle of Newburn Ford took place when the Scots, under the command of the Earl of Leven, defeated the English whom they outnumbered 7 to 1, at what was the lowest fordable point on the Tyne at that time.
