Musselburgh is a historic market and fishing town in east-Lothian in Scotland situated six miles east of Edinburgh on the River Esk near the sea. Originally the town was known as Eskmouth before it was renamed after a ‘mussel-bank’ near the mouth of the river c1200. Musselburgh received Royal Burgh status in 1632 and continued to be a busy port with ships trading to Holland and Norway until the early 19th century. Musselburgh is famous for its Racecourse built in 1817 and its ancient Golf Course said to have been played on by James IV in 1504.
