Just as Superman was The Man of Steel, Motherwell can justifiably regard itself as the town of steel. Sitting in North Lanarkshire, some 20 minute’s drive from Glasgow, the town was forged in the blast furnace of the metal industry. Ravenscraig, that iconic pillar of Scottish industrialism, was responsible for swelling the area’s economy before the post-Thatcher years saw the lights go out on the plant. Such was its capacity for production, Motherwell was nicknamed Steelopolis. How times have changed.
