The former royal burgh of Montrose is the most northerly of the Angus towns. It is situated on the east coast of Scotland. Montrose is a popular tourist resort and commercial port. Burgh status came with the reign of David II. Montrose is a historic town abundant in interesting architecture including the Town House or Ba Hoose 1763, the Montrose Museum and Art Gallery contains some Pictish cross-slabs, whaling mementoes and paintings. The High Street is the widest in Scotland, dominated by a detached 200 foot Steeple built in 1832-34; it sits next to the Church 1791.
