Montgomery has always been an historically important town situated in the Welsh Marches between Wales and England and is possibly one of the prettiest towns in Wales. That is not to ignore the fact that historically Montgomery was a battleground, its castle being built in around 1223 by Henry III, whilst in the surrounding area there is evidence of several iron age hill forts, a Roman fort, Offa’s Dyke and a Welsh castle as well as two Norman castles. Why the military interest in the area? Montgomery lies strategically close to a narrow crossing of the River Severn and this formed not only a route for trade but also communication and whoever controlled the crossing therefore controlled trade and communications.
