Moffat is a small historical town in Dumfries and Galloway in southern Scotland situated 19 miles north-east of Dumfries on the River Annan. Moffat lies on the famous long distance Southern Upland Way and is one of the first stops after crossing the border from England known as ‘a gateway to Scotland.’ The town was Scotland’s first Spa resort from the 1650’s until 1921 with a sulphurous mineral spring found nearby which was thought to have health-giving qualities. There is an area to the north of town known as the ‘Devil’s Beef Tub’ this is where sheep and cattle rustlers would hide the stolen animals before moving them on.
