Visitors to Minster - several miles from the coast - might be surprised to learn that it was once a bustling and important port. Centuries of sand and shingle deposition eventually closed up estuaries, rivers and the Wantsum Channel, which separated the Isle of Thanet from mainland Kent. Minster farmers now cultivate crops in fields where the old harbour used to be. This picturesque village is only five or six miles from Thanet's traditional seaside resorts of Ramsgate, Margate and Broadstairs, and it's an ideal base for exploring the idyllic inland scenery of Kent.
