Admiral Horatio Nelson called it "dear, dear Merton". Nelson, the most famous former resident of this area in south-west London, lived here in a wonderful estate with mistress Emma Hamilton for three years before his death in 1805. The grand mansion and grounds have since gone, making way for industrial units and housing, but Nelson is commemorated throughout the district in many of its place names. St Mary's church, which in part dates from Medieval times, has preserved Nelson's pew, and the Nelson Arms marks the spot where the Admiral's visitors would enter his estate, past the gate lodge.
