Melrose is an ancient town in the central Scottish Borders region, situated on the south-side of the River Tweed lying at the foot of the Eildon Hills, 3 miles south-east of Galashiels and 37 miles south-east of Edinburgh. Melrose is famous as the place where the game of Rugby Sevens originally came from and since 1883 have hosed the annual Melrose Sevens competition. Settlers in the area date back to the Iron Age with a hill-fort on the top of the Eildons. The Romans arrived c79AD and built a large fort named Trimontium.
