Mellor is to be found on the edge of the Peak District National Park and originally was in the County of Derbyshire, in 1936 it was transferred to Cheshire and then in 1974 it became part of Stockport Metropolitan where it is today. Evidence of Bronze Age and Roman settlements have been found next to Mellor Church and it is thought that a Roman villa is located under the church. The structure of the village of Mellor is mainly ribbon development starting at Longhurst Lane and as the road makes its way up the hill it meets Church Lane and continues onto Moor End Road where most of the older part of the village is to be found.
