Mawdesley is recorded as being an “extensive and fertile township between Croston and Wrightington†and this is still true today, nestling in the picturesque Lancashire countryside. History tells us that the town of Mawdesley gained its name as part of a dowry of one Matilda-Mawde when she married – and thus the town was born. The Mawdesley family lived in the area for many years, it is thought that Mawdesley Hall was built by William Mawdesley in 1625, and then around four generations ago the family established themselves as basket manufacturers in what was the Towngate Basket Works which remained open until the 1960’s – no longer a basket works the building still stands today having been extensively renovated.
