Manaccan, on a hill in the northeast corner of the Lizard Peninsula, blends the best aspects of a remote location (in past times so remote that smugglers continued here long after the Revenue had stopped such activities elsewhere in the region) and popularity with visitors to create a village that is quietly comfortable, welcoming, and full of character. As regards that character, nothing epitomises it more than the lovely old church, with its famous fig tree growing from the tower wall; and just outside the village the mysterious fogou (an Iron Age tunnel refuge-cum-store) which was re-discovered only a few years ago, and has so far yielded finds of Roman coins as well as Celtic artefacts.
