Maida Vale is a leafy residential area in west London, much sought after by homebuyers. It took its name from a pub, the Hero of Maida, which opened in Edgware Road in 1809. The pub itself was named after the Battle Of Maida in south Italy three years earlier, in which British forces had defeated Napolean's army. The area is characterised by some striking stucco crescents and handsome red-brick buildings that include Edwardian mansion blocks. Large private gardens, tree-lined avenues and the open spaces of Paddington Recreation Ground all contribute to the pleasing appearance of Maida Vale.
