The small settlement of Lupton in the south eastern corner of Cumbria is just a mile east of junction 36 of the M6, an ideal place to break a journey to or from Scotland, or for exploring southern Lakeland or nearby North Yorkshire. The village, roughly halfway between Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale on the A65, stands on Lupton Beck, a tributary of the River Bela, and the area is known for game fishing. The country around Lupton is a mainly low-lying, but a short stroll away there is Scout Hill, a little less than 1,000 feet.
