There is a small group of villages in south-east Buckinghamshire, on the edge of The Chiltern Hills, called The Chalfonts. Chalfont Road Village, or Little Chalfont as it has been known since 1925, is one such village. It now has a population of about 5,000 but didn’t expand until the arrival of the railway in 1889. Since then, a community has developed around the Metropolitan Line station – becoming part of Betjemen’s “Metroland†and being just outside the M25, only 30 miles from central London.
