Within the South East area of Hampshire is the village of Liphook which grew from the need for a coaching stop in the area for travellers on their way from the London to Portsmouth stagecoach run, and where better to stop than the centre of the settlement and that is how the Royal Anchor Inn came to be. The present location is said to have been an inn as far back as the 14th century however the present building traces its history back to the 16th century and it has entertained such important guests as Nelson and Lady Hamilton as well as Queen Victoria and Wellington.
