Lerwick is the most northerly town of the British Isles and the capital of the Shetland Islands in Scotland; it is situated on a natural harbour on the Mainland of Shetland with the island of Bressay to the east. The area has evidence of settlers dating back to the Bronze Age with the ruins of Clickmin Broch on the edge of Lerwick. The town developed in the 17th century as a fishing base for the Dutch herring fishermen, in 1655 Fort Charlotte was built by Cromwell over looking the harbour to oust the Dutch from Lerwick while Holland was at war with England.
