11 miles east of Cirencester, in the extreme southeast of the county, and where the Rivers Coln and Leach flow into the River Thames sits the ancient market town of Lechlade. Lying close to where the three counties of Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire meet with Gloucestershire, Lechlade marks the turning point for large river craft (the river becomes too shallow a little way beyond the town). A borough and market town from the thirteenth century the town prospered from the wool trade of the Cotswolds, it served as a staging point for the transportation of wool and other goods.
