The Renfrewshire town of Langbank owes both its name and its existence to the River Clyde, on whose banks it sits proudly. Langbank in Auld Scots’ parlance means ‘long bank’, and the town hugs the waterside in the Inverclyde region. It is an area that witnesses the Clyde widening into an estuarine environment, once home to heavy industry and some remarkable wildlife. Naturally, the latter suffered from Glasgow’s industrial age but the regeneration of river systems can be startlingly swift, and now as the West of Scotland’s economy recovers and renews itself, so too the its river.
