Lambeth - an historic district close to the South Bank - is also referred to as Waterloo. But streets such as Lambeth Road and Lambeth Palace Road have some wonderful old buildings with a character quite distinct from the general spread of Waterloo. Chief among them is Lambeth Palace, home to the Archbishop of Canterbury since 1200 AD. The Palace, whose chapel and crypt date from the 13th Century, does not admit visitors except by arrangement, although its beautiful English gardens are opened for special events, including the annual Lambeth Fete.
