Knaresborough is a sizeable North Yorkshire market town, its population 14,740 at the last census. Located between Harrogate just a couple of miles to the west, and York, ten to the east, it makes a good base for visits to those larger settlements, but has plenty to recommend it to visitors as a destination in itself. With its own station, and located just a five minute drive from junction 47 of the A1(M), Knaresborough is easy to get to. The most notable man-made attraction in the town is its castle, a Norman building pulled down in part after a siege during the Civil War.
