Situated by the River Garnock on the west coast of Scotland in North Ayrshire is the small town of Kilbirnie. Located ten miles north of Irvine, the village arose around the ‘Auld Kirk,’ a 15th century parish church, one of the oldest churches still in use today; in 1740 there were only three houses in the village. Kilbirnie derived its name from the parish church. The church was dedicated to Saint Birinie and in celtic the prefix Kil means church. The ‘Auld Kirk’ is a tourist attraction containing the Crawford Gallery and in the grounds is a mausoleum dedicated to the Crawford family.
