Kessingland is a village in Suffolk, about 4 miles south of Lowestoft and 7 miles north of the resort of Southwold. Palaeolithic and Neolithic implements have been found here and the remains of an ancient forest lie buried on the seabed. Kessingland is a former fishing village. Today the marshland has taken over after shingle beds silted up the estuary. St.Edmund church also fell into ruin until it was rebuilt in the 16th century. Much of the town was swept into the sea in the 19th century. The village was for many years split into two parts 'the Street' and the 'Beach'.
