Jesmond is a residential suburb of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the north east of England. Originally known as Gese Muth as it overlooks the valley at the mouth of the river Ouse. Shortly after the Norman Invasion, an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary supposedly occurred at St.Mary’’s Rock, in the midst of the stream next to Ridley Hill and the name was changed to Jesmond or ‘hill of Jesus’. A slipper chapel was built on the west side of the valley, later falling into disrepair and then ruin after the Reformation in the sixteenth century, whereupon pilgrims removed their shoes before continuing to the site of the apparition barefoot.
