There are not many towns you can say this about, but visit Inveraray and you’ll probably end up in jail. No, the town isn’t lawless; its main attraction is its 19th century jail. The jail housed both male and female prisoners and administered justice from its own courthouse. Situated in the bosom of Argyll, Inveraray looks out to the photogenic Loch Fyne. The town we see today was built on what was known as ‘Gallows Foreland’ and its appearance has remained almost unchanged from 1820, when the Duke of Argyll’s plans for the town were finally completed.
