Once a market town for much of coastal North Yorkshire, Hunmanby still has its market cross as a reminder of those prosperous times. It was moved down the administrative scale from town to village in the late 19th century, but it is still a substantial place, and one of several in the country to claim the title of Britain’s largest village. Hunmanby has benefited from its location just a couple of miles from Filey, in that it retains a train station at the edge of the village on the line to the coast, whereas the road which once brought coach traffic through the then town is now a mile away from the village – the best of both worlds in other words.
