Holywell is located in North Wales high on the hillside with views out across the River Dee towards the Wirral Peninsula. Holywell takes its name from the well that is in fact a spring of fresh water. Legend has it that Gwenfrei was a 7th century girl who at a young age wanted to become a nun, an only child of wealthy parents she enjoyed an education by a monk called Bueno. The legend goes that one day she was sat at home and was attacked by Prince Caradog who had taken a fancy to her – she escaped but Caradog took off in pursuit and caught her on the hillside where he cut off her head.
