Highbridge is a town in Somerset situated close to the Bristol Channel coast, near the mouth of the River Brue and on the very edge of the Somerset Levels. It is a market town whose importance increased with the growth of the railways, but suffered as they declined. Evidence has been found of Roman settlements in the area; the bridge itself is thought to have existed in some form back in Saxon times. It is not known exactly when the current stone humpback bridge was built. Highbridge grew into a regional market and industrial town between the latter half of the 19th century and the early 20th century.
