Hendon, in north-west London, has long been associated with flying. Pioneering British pilot Claude Grahame-White founded the London Aerodrome in Hendon in 1910. It was later taken over by the RAF and today houses the Royal Airforce Museum, displaying more than 100 full-size planes including the famous Spitfire and Lancaster Bomber. Also on the old Aerodrome site is a Metropolitan Police training college. The history of Hendon is preserved in many of its buildings. St Mary's Church, despite its restorations, dates back to 1080, and its surviving Norman font is still used for baptisms.
