Hellingly is a small village just off the A267 at the northern end of the River Cuckmere, 12 miles east of Lewes and 9 miles north of Eastbourne. The name probably derives from the Old English `hyllinga-leage` = clearing of the hill dwellers. The 12th century church - St.Peter & St.Paul - is built on the last undamaged ciric in Sussex; a ciric is a circular Celtic burial mound (the circle is believed to be the Celtic symbol of immortality), although the mound is not now circular but oval, more land was given to the church in the 12th century.
