Only a few miles north of Heathrow Airport, Hayes is located in the outer reaches of west London. It's a residential town, well supplied with hotels and guest houses for travellers staying near the airport. Literary types may be interested in the Fountain House Hotel since it was once a boys' high school where George Orwell taught. The name Hayes comes from an Anglo Saxon word meaning "brushwood". Indeed, the town originated from a group of five rural villages that existed peacefully until industrialisation arrived, aided by the Grand Union Canal in 1794 and the Great Western Railway (1864).
